How to watch TV on TNT HD on their smartphone or tablet?

Freeview HD is widespread in France April 5, 2016, which had adverse consequences for users who watched TNT from their smartphone or tablet with a dedicated receiver. Here is a selection of apps for watching TNT (HD) directly from a phone or tablet.

As well explained Pierre Dandumont on his blog, the transition to DTT HD (H.264) in France on April 5 did not have only positive effects for viewers. If the transition to HD while freeing the 700 MHz band for 4G mobile operators, two major consequences ensued.
The first is the obligation to buy a dedicated decoder for non-compatible TVs with Freeview HD which uses the H.264 video codec instead of the older MPEG2. The other consequence is the inability to use the decoders (tuners) microUSB (or Lightning at Apple) who came to plug into smartphones and tablets to receive DTT on mobile devices.

A lack of power, or will?
The cause, according to Elgato, the main player in the field who has since sold its branch dedicated to Geniatech, the lack of power of mobile devices to decode an image in HD with H.264 codec. Reading the specs of Android TV PCTV System, the competitor Elgato, leads to the same conclusion: the product is compatible with SD channels in H.264, but not with HD channels.
In fact, the latest mobile devices are capable of decoding this type of flow in software, but it seems that both manufacturers do not intend, at least in the short term, to provide this support. In short, it is now impossible in France to receive HD DTT on mobile with a dedicated receiver. Fortunately, there are alternatives.

Applications chains

The simplest solution is to go through featured apps on the Play Store or App Store by the chains. Often, they allow viewers to watch live programs from their mobile devices and even offer interesting features, such as information on current programs and future, but also upgrading features on demand.

It may well include francetv Pluzz that offer direct channels of the France Live TV (1st, France 2, France 3, France 4, France 5 etFrance O). There also MYTF1 for live access to four channels of the group TF1, TMC, NT1 and HD1. The other major player in the sector, M6, offers 6play application with the M6 channel, W9 and 6b live. To stay in large groups, there are applications D8 and D17 channels Canal + Group. The list is not exhaustive and the vast majority of DTT channels have a dedicated mobile application, including BFM TV and iTele.

Applications of Internet service providers
If you have an Internet subscription to your home, it is possible that it incorporates an option to watch live TV on your mobile device. Thus, we find the SFR TV application at SFR, Numericable's TV Box or B.tv for Bouygues Telecom. With Free, it will go through a third party application, such Box'n TV. Finally, at Orange, is the Orange TV application to watch live TV.

All applications do not work the same way. Some need to be connected to the home Wi-Fi network while others allow you to watch live TV channels from any connection including 3G or 4G. Moreover, it should check with their ISP (or sometimes with his mobile operator) to see if you have the option, often called multi or multiscreen.

IPTV streams
You feel the soul of a handyman? Remember that it is possible to receive the IPTV stream ISPs (except Numericable) directly from Android or iOS, with a few manipulations. It requires installing VLC on the terminal and look for the list of addresses of IPTV streams on specialized forums, often in the form of playlists. VLC will then take to read these files, you will have access to the list of TNT. Unless you set up a home server, this solution is only possible from a fixed line Internet ISP concerned. If you are interested, a ride on our forum should help.
The advantage is to have a higher image quality applications, since the flow here is the same as that provided for the box TV ISPs. If you want to go even further, it is possible to install a TV tuner on your computer (or via Raspberry Pi) and create a server that will link the smartphone or tablet to view the native DVB stream, c that is to say not broadcast over the Internet IPTV, with so superior image quality.

A heterogeneous offer
After reading this issue, one thing is obvious: the TV channels offer more compelling applications, even if they have major drawbacks for some as the inability to use the Google Cast functionality to display the image on a TV. ISPs also seized the issue, with options and very practical applications, in the image of The Box TV Numericable which provides access to DTT channels for a cellular connection.

It still lacks a product category the call: Freeview receivers, like the EyeTV Geniatech products (formerly Elgato) or PCTV System Android TV that are now incompatible with Freeview HD. These products were extremely useful, since they allow to receive, from anywhere, all the DTT channels in optimum quality. However we imagine that these products now represent a niche market, threatened increasingly by applications, certainly convenient, but lower quality.
